Traditional process

Deg-Bhapka

An editorial introduction to the copper vessels, water, heat and time of traditional distillation.

What is Deg-Bhapka?

Deg-Bhapka is the name commonly used for a traditional distillation arrangement associated with Kannauj perfumery. The deg holds the material and water; the bhapka acts as the receiving vessel in descriptions of the apparatus.

Heat, vapour and condensation

Heating the deg produces vapour carrying aromatic compounds. The vapour travels through the connection to the cooler receiver, where it condenses into the receiving medium. The perfumer manages the process through practical experience and observation.
